The 2026 Tour de France introduces a revised team time trial format and new technological features, marking a return of the event to the race for the first time since 1971.
The opening stage on July 4 will be held in Barcelona, where teams will compete over a 19.6 km route that finishes on the climb to Montjuïc. The course includes fast sections along the seafront and two climbs near the end, with the Côte du Stade Olympique de Montjuïc featuring a gradient of 7% over 0.8 km.
This year’s team time trial format differs from previous editions. Instead of recording the team’s time based on the fourth or fifth rider, the 2026 rules state that each rider’s individual time will count toward the general classification. This approach was previously tested at Paris-Nice since 2023 and at the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes in 2026.
Technological developments are also visible among the teams and riders. Tadej Pogačar will use the Colnago TT2 time trial bike, which is 550 g lighter than the earlier model and features enhanced aerodynamics and handling. His setup includes a single 64-tooth Carbon-Ti chainring, 160 mm Dura-Ace crank arms, and an aero bottom bracket from Bikone.

Alpecin-Premier Tech’s team bikes are equipped with hub-mounted speed sensors, a technology that has largely been replaced by GPS-based bike computers in recent years. This choice contrasts with the more advanced setups seen on other teams’ bikes.
The team time trial’s return is part of a broader set of rule changes for the 2026 Tour de France. Alongside the new TTT format, organizers have introduced a recalibrated points system for the green jersey and updated safety standards for sprint finishes.
