W R Berkley Operating Income Rises as Net Income Falls

W. R. Berkley Corporation recorded $456.5 million in operating income for the third quarter of 2026, compared with $440.2 million a year earlier, according to its October 19 results release. Net income moved in the opposite direction, declining from $511.0 million in the third quarter of 2025 to $446.0 million.

The company’s operating income measure is non-GAAP. Its calculation removes investment gains and losses and associated expenses after tax, along with after-tax gains and losses from foreign currency. On a diluted-share basis, operating income amounted to $1.17, while net income was $1.14.

Chartmill described the $1.17 operating earnings-per-share result as essentially matching a consensus forecast of $1.1628. In Berkley’s release, the $1.17 figure is designated as operating income per diluted share.

Revenue was below both the consensus estimate and the year-earlier total. Chartmill put third-quarter revenue at $3.739 billion, approximately 3.2% below the $3.864 billion consensus estimate. Separately, MarketScreener listed revenue of about $3.739 billion for the quarter, compared with $3.768 billion for the third quarter of 2025.

Within Berkley’s Insurance segment, pretax income from underwriting reached $237.7 million, a year-over-year increase of 10.6%, the company said. Berkley also recorded higher net investment income, at $383.5 million, and cited growth of 12.0% in its core portfolio.

For underwriting, Berkley reported a combined ratio of 90.8%. A separate measure for the current accident year stood at 88.1%, with catastrophe losses accounting for 2.7 percentage points excluded from that figure. Under the company’s definition, adding the loss and expense ratios produces the GAAP combined ratio.

Berkley’s operating return on equity was lower than in the comparable quarter: the company reported 18.8% for the third quarter of 2026, against 21.0% a year earlier.

A share-price snapshot displayed in Chartmill’s article showed Berkley at $74.08, a decline of 1.78%. That figure represents the article’s quoted snapshot rather than a closing price.

Berkley describes its business as a holding company for property-casualty insurance operations. Its two segments are Insurance and Reinsurance & Monoline Excess.
